Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was the greatest national leader of India. He was also a great politician, an organiser and a reformer. He was a great author and good speaker. He was one of these great men who dedicated their lives to the service of mankind.

Life-Sketch of Gandhiji:

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in a trading family of Porbandar. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His father was the Dewan of the Rajkot state. He was married to Kasturba at the age of 13. As a boy at school he was shy and lonely. After passing his matriculation examination he was sent to England to study law. He came back to India in 1890 as a barrister. He started his practice at Rajkot but later on he shifted to Bombay.

Methods and Ideals of Gandhiji

Gandhiji introduced new ideals in politics and adopted new methods to give new direction to the National Movement to achieve freedom for his country.
Religious Ideals:

Religious Ideals:

According to him, the essence of religion lies in the search for truth. He considered morality as the fundamental basis of religion. Moral power gives such confidence to a person that even the unarmed can hope to conquer the biggest power on earth. He had firm faith in humanism which he considered as the true religion. True religion teaches us truth, non-violence, love and affection for all, and leads to the purity of thought and action. He laid great stress on equality.

Truth and non-violence were the two pillars on which the grand design of his religion was erected. Truth is God and Truth is universal. He attached equal importance to right ends and right means to realise these ends. He believed that politics divorced from religious and spiritual values was absolutely meaningless. He was of the view that religion has the same relation with politics as the soul has with the body.

An Ideal State:

Gandhiji was in favour of a stateless society. He considered the state a necessary evil. He was the supporter of democracy and wanted that power should be in the hands of the people along with the government exercising normal authority. He said that the government was there only to guide and not to use force. He wanted a welfare state in India. He wanted the state to be secular. He believed in the decentralisation of power through the Panchayati Raj. He advocated the freedom of the individual. The state should have no right to interfere in the lives of its citizens. In short, it can be said that Gandhiji believed in the establishment of the Ram Rajya.

The Ideal of Trusteeship:

Gandhiji believed in the ideal of trusteeship. According to him, all property belonged to God. The land possessed by landlords and the wealth possessed by the rich also belonged to God, who had appointed them as His trustees. Therefore, they should use only as much as they needed for themselves. He was opposed to the accumulation of wealth and economic inequality. He inspired the peasants and workers to fight against injustice for their interests but he was against strikes.

Gandhi ji’s Doctrine of Non-Violence:

The whole of Gandhiji’s philosophy is based on non-violence. He never believed that non-violence was a weapon of the strong, powerful and mighty individuals. According to Gandhiji, true love, dauntlessness, inner purity and feeling of selflessness form the basis of non-violence . It is not a negative but a positive and active force. He maintained that it is the lack of power that makes a person coward as he hits others out of fear. a non-violent person armed with moral strength can walk on a sword’s edge. He inspired the unarmed people of India to fight against the mighty British Empire and win freedom.As a result Indians got freedom at last.
